A Message From Prostitution

Monday, August 22nd, 2011

This upcoming Sunday, August 28th Prostitution will be celebrating the release of their new 7″ and music video with the premiere of the video and a live performance at K&M Bar (N 8th And Roebling) from 7-10pm.  These guys absolutely slay and I’ll be loading up one of their recent live shows very soon, but that doesn’t mean you should miss this great event.  Here’s the message directly from their bassist, Jesse.

Hello all,

So, most of you know about this by now, but I just wanted to make sure. Again, as you know, we, prostitution have finished our video and our 7″ record. It took a long time, but with a lot of persistence and hard work it came together and the end product is beautiful. To celebrate this momentous occasion we are having a party, a release if you will, this Sunday night. We’re gonna show the video on a large screen then play a short set. Yeah! It’s at K and M Bar (N.8th and Roebling) and is FREE! We decided to do it early, 7-10 so all you workaholics can get a good nights rest for the upcoming week.
Please come and see what we’ve done. This means a lot to all of us and we want to share it with you. Again, this is a free event. We will also have drink specials for those 3 hours. Some cheap stuff, feel me. Please pass this on, re-post, bring your friends. We want a packed house. I know everyone has a lot on there plate, but please try to stop by if for only a bit.
If you haven’t seen the trailer for the video yet, click here……it’s kinda awesome.
Hope to see you there,
Jesse

Album Review: Just Fucking Destroy

Album: Just Fucking Destroy

Artist: Christopher M. Carrigy

Welcome to the weird world of Christopher M. Carrigy; a land of funky bass, ambient synth and poppy darkness.  This album is an 18 track oddity that moves between dark bass driven rock music, synth interludes, some improv jams and a whole bunch of fucking around.  Personally I would only consider the first 10 tracks to be the actual album, with the final 8 being more of an unscripted and honest look into Chris’ own special brand of humor.  In that regard this album probably reveals the most comprehensive spectrum of his musical tastes and capabilities.  The only thing that is missing from the mix is the sheer fury and aggression of Chris’ previous (Fetal Syndrome) and current (Ashes Within) projects.  And I suppose that is the point of all this, to make music simply for the fun of it and to exorcise all those other demons that haven’t had any space in the aforementioned works.

The album opens with “Burn Your Southern Skies” propelled forth by a driving distorted chugging bass line and tortured sounding vocals.  The track is pretty indicative of   what to expect from most of the first 10 tracks; a melodramatic dreary mix of rock inspired by the likes of Korn and Devin Townsend.  “Premature” follows in the same trend, but with a more somber tone reminiscent of the slower tracks found on early Slipknot albums.  Then you have the track “Just Destroy” which builds with ominous synth swells before settling into a groovy almost Taproot-like mid tempo jam before fading out with more synth effects.  These 3 tracks comprise the conventional Verse-Chorus song structure element of the album, with the remaining 7 tracks being a mix of drum and bass jams or synthesizer interludes.

The jams are funky and tight, but not necessarily my cup o’ tea.  I also find that they are somewhat out of place in the overall context of the album, but again this whole project seems like it is purely a reflection of Chris’ desire to do whatever the fuck he wants without boundaries.  On the other hand I felt that all the interludes between songs have been perfectly composed and make for smooth transitions between tracks while keeping the dour tone of the whole affair.

I can’t even begin to comment on tracks 11-18 because I truly don’t know how to make sense of them in the context of the rest of this album, but if you really want to get a great sense of Chris’ sense of humor I would suggest you take the time to check out “Ragdoll”.  I guess it’s an ode to cheap whores or something.

In summation, I don’t know what to compare this to, but maybe that’s a good thing.  There’s definitely a great sense of songwriting ability on display here and I imagine it could be harnessed into something more cohesive  and poignant, but I doubt that was the point on this project.  Mostly this album will serve as a great introduction to Christopher M. Carrigy, beyond that I’m still puzzled about what it’s all about.

The Forthcoming Fall of Humanity

Friday, July 1st, 2011

I woke up today, at the righteous hour of 11 AM, to an email from Eston Browne, singer of Humanity Falls, asking for little love for their forthcoming tour.  Some of you may remember that Eston had recently been kind enough to sit down and do an interview with me in advance of their gig with Suffocation at Santo’s Party House, which you can check out here. Well now I am happy to announce that the boys in HUmanity Falls will be hitting the road to bring slaughter across the land on a quick 5 date run of the Northeast.  Check out their press release and if you know anybody in any of these towns then tell ‘em to get on out to see some of NYC’s finest death metal.

From Humanity Falls:

After a memorable show at Santos Party House in May with death metal legends Suffocation and Misery Index and another with Germany’s Defeated Sanity, New York’s death metal/grind trio Humanity Falls will be embarking on a mini-tour entitled “The Imminent Dehumanization Tour” with Virginia’s own The Leviathan’s Mandible. The short 5 day tour begins in Boston, Mass at Champion’s Cafe and concludes in Montclair, New Jersey where they will be playing with California’s Ash Borer and Ruin Lust (feat. members of Fell Voices) who are also on tour together. The Leviathan’s Mandible will be touring in support of their upcoming 3 way split with Kindergarden Hazing Ritual and Baby Basher (for fans of Maruta, Phobia, Circle of Dead Children) and Humanity Falls has just recently released their debut album “Ordaining The Apocalypse” on The Path Less Traveled Records back in January. Please be sure to check out these bands if they are playing at a venue near you. All Humanity Falls tour dates and music (along with a streaming new track) are located below.

What is a Duskeyhead?

Monday, June 6th, 2011

It was only a short while ago that I had the privilege of sitting down with John LaMacchia (Candiria, Spylacopa) to discuss his many current projects, including his new, yet old musical project Crooked Man.  As he explained to me at the time Crooked Man has become the title of a project that represents over 10 years worth of musical writing.  So, needless to say this has been a long labor of love to finally bring this music forth into the world.  Well, fortunately my internet boredom led me to peruse Facebook the other day and encounter a post concerning a new entry on John’s personal blog, which you can check here.

In this post he discusses his earliest forays into playing music, as well as his new project Crooked Man.  But what is also excellent is that he links everyone to Crooked Man’s Facebook profile, which features a track titled “Duskyhead”.  I’ve listened to the song a bunch now and just keep enjoying it more each time.  This is definitely a song for people who enjoy more mellow, somnolent and somewhat dark music, but it also is catchy as hell.  I suggest everyone take 5 minutes out of their day to go “like” Crooked Man on facebook and check out this excellent track.  Just click on the tab to the left of the screen titled “BandPage” to find the new track “Duskeyhead”
